Skinner Looking to Shake, Rattle and Roll into Victory Lane
- Skinner will be making his inaugural Craftsman Truck Series debut at Memphis Motorsports Park.
- Mike Skinner will be asking his son, Jamie, for advice on how to navigate the ¾-mile oval. Jamie took over his father’s No. 19 Yellow Freight Busch Series ride in Memphis in 1999, but his Memphis debut was cut short after being involved in an early-race accident.
- Skinner is the most consistent leader of NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races having led laps at six of seven events this season. In 2004, Skinner has led 240 total laps, an average of 20 percent.
- The No. 42 Toyota Tundra team will be taking Frank to the track this weekend, named for his favorite wine owner, Frank Altamura, and vineyard, Altamura Winery and Vineyards in Napa Valley. Frank was last on track at Mansfield where Skinner brought home an 11th place finish. Frank has also logged a second place finish at Atlanta, a fifth place finish at Martinsville and 11th in Mansfield. Frank has also logged testing laps at Homestead, Lakeland, Texas and Caraway and can be seen in Toyota commercials airing nationwide.
- Skinner is more than comfortable on inaugural tracks. Since his career began in the truck series in 1995, he’s accumulated five wins, 10 top-five’s and 11 top-10’s on short tracks that he’s never seen before in the truck series. “I’d never seen the race at Colorado when I raced there, and I won,” he said. “I never ran Phoenix, and I won there as well. I’ve also won twice in Japan…another new track. When I go to places for the first time, I seem to adapt to them really well, so I’m not really apprehensive about that at all. In fact, I think that will play in our favor.”
- Mike Swaim Sr., former Busch Series driver, will be spotting again for Skinner this weekend. Swaim Sr. has spotted for Ward Burton in the Busch and former Winston Cup Series, Cup driver Ricky Craven and Busch Series driver Tim Sauter. Swaim Sr. has been a car owner in the Busch Series and fielded a team for son Mike Swaim, Jr. in the Goody’s Dash Series. Swaim Sr. was also a two-time NASCAR Goody's Dash Series Champion in 1984 and 1985. The No. 42 Toyota Tundra team has accumulated two top-five’s and five top-10 starts as well as three top-five finishes in 2004.
Mike Skinner’s Thoughts on Memphis
Knowing that you don’t have any experience at Memphis, does it concern you going to that track?
Not really. It’s a racetrack, and it’s got four corners. That’s my job - to adapt to different places like that. We went to Mansfield and we adjusted really quickly to that track, so I don’t think this will be any different. Obviously, I’ll ask Jamie some questions about it since he ran my Busch car there, and I’ll definitely get some pointers from him as far as what to expect. I can also rely on my teammate, Travis Kvapil, who has won there and finished second in Memphis just last fall.
Crew Chief Rick Ren on Memphis
I was the crew chief for Travis when he won his first race at Memphis and second career victory, and I’ve had two or three top-five's and a second place finish. But I’ve had good and bad runs at Memphis. It’s a driver’s race track. If the driver uses too much break, you’re not going to run good. If the driver uses too little break, you’re not going to run good. I call it a driver-momentum race track. It’s just one of those deals that if Mike and I are on the same page and we hit the right setup and get to where he’s comfortable and not using too much break, I think we’ll run well there. I’m not worried about the crew. They’re doing a phenomenal job.
But knowing that more emphasis is placed on the driver at a place like Memphis and Skinner hasn’t seen a lap at that track, does that concern you with your chances for victory?
It doesn’t bother me at all. We took Travis as a rookie to race tracks that he had only read about in magazines before. I’m not concerned about taking Skinner to a racetrack that he’s never seen. His track record is pretty good at inaugural tracks on the circuit.
