Reutimann Top Rookie Qualifier
Reutimann will start eighth in Friday's race, his second top-10 start in six
races this season. He is the only Raybestos Rookie that will start inside the
top-10. "It's OK. It got loose our second lap and the second lap I felt like
most guys were picking up a little bit so maybe we could have picked up a
half-tenth or so and it might have put us in better shape. I'm just trying to
figure out where I'm supposed to be on the racetrack and lift points and stuff
like that. All in all, it was the fastest that we've run all day, by far, so I
don't think it was bad. It didn't stay in the top-five so. It would be nice to
stay in the top-10 if we could. I'm not really sure if it will hang in there or
not. I hope it will be better than the 24th that we had a Lowe's . I'm
just figuring out where to run and the last practice got cut a little bit short
because we had an accident on the racetrack so we never really got to make our
full qualifying run. I watched some of those guys go out there and they were
driving way deeper than I'd been all day long. The truck really freed up when I
really drove it the way that it needed to be driven to qualify it. If we could
have maybe run a qualifying lap at the end of practice maybe we would have found
that out. It is what it is. It drove good and I feel like it will race good."
THIS IS YOUR FIRST TIME HERE. "I've never even been here to watch a race. At
least at Lowe's I'd been in the infield, stood on some motorhomes and watched.
Other than watching them on TV, I've never made a lap. It's pretty impressive.
It gets your attention in a hurray."
WHAT IS IT GOING TO BE LIKE TO RACE HERE? "I don't know. I got behind a couple
of guys in practice could get to them and then it looked like it was really hard
to pass. Some Cup races that I've watched in the past cars move up the racetrack
but it seems so more in the second Cup race of the year than the first one. I
don't really know what to expect. That's the fun part of being a Raybestos
Rookie: it's like Christmas morning every time you roll out there. You don't
know what you're going to get. Jason Overstreet and Bobby Kennedy and those guys
are helping me with that. Bobby is like 'I think maybe you could drive in a
little harder' and this was after practice. I was like 'It's a dadgum fine time
to tell me that now.' The problem is that when everybody is out there you can't
hear where everybody is lifting and right there toward the end of practice when
things start spreading out it like 'Wow, that guys is getting in there pretty
deep.' You'd like to go out and try it but you can't. It's an ongoing learning
process. But we're fixing to come up on some racetracks that I've been to so
maybe we'll be a little better there."
BRANDON WHITT, #38 AUTISM NOW/MCMILLIAN HOMES FORD: "It's disappointing.
We were real good in practice and we went out there and it was super- loose. I
had to back out of it twice through the corner and we missed it by a little bit
but we thought we were good in practice. We'll see where we end up, hopefully
top-15 or top-20. The track changed a lot from practice to qualifying. It got
real slick. I don't know what happened. I don't know if we over adjusted or if
the track just got warmer and slicker."
KEN WEAVER, #08 1-800-4-A-PHONE CHEVROLET:
Weaver crashed in practice before qualifying. He will use a backup truck in
the race and start at the rear of the field. Weaver was not injured in the
incident. WHAT HAPPENED IN PRACTICE? "The first practice we were really tight.
We were getting four-wheel drift. The nose was skating so we were loosening up.
We weren't up to speed but started picking up speed and coming off four it was
just a little tight. I corrected and man it snapped loose. I tried to dig it off
the wall and I did: I dug it off one and right into the other . I
thought I could do that. I spun there last year and saved it, didn't touch a
thing and this year it just wasn't in the cards. When I got it off the outside
wall I had too much momentum and I couldn't get it to hook back. It tore all
four corners off the thing. It hit pretty hard. They said it crushed part of my
helmet so they are looking at that now. I'm not sore but I guess I tagged it a
lot harder than I thought I did. We're going to bring the backup out and thank
God there's just a full field or maybe one shy so we're not even going to go
through qualifying. We're going to set in the back and see what we've got for
happy hour. If we don't have anything we'll ride and if we do we'll try to
race."
ROBERT HUFFMAN, #12 TOYOTA TUNDRA TOYOTA:
"We were quicker than that in practice. We just got too loose in qualifying.
We need to concentrate on the race. Charlotte was the first race that we've been
able to finish. We need to get me some track time and learn to race these guys.
We've been qualifying real good so maybe we need to be on the other end of
qualifying and race a little better." THIS IS YOUR FIRST TIME HERE AT DOVER. "It
probably wasn't as shocking to me because I've raced at Bristol before but
that's not quite as intimidating as Bristol. I feel sure it's going to be
different when you get out there and racing with 36 other trucks. It's going to
take some getting used to."
KELLY SUTTON, #02 TEAM COPAXONE CHEVROLET:
"We actually qualified a second faster than what we ran in practice. We did
pick up some so we're happy with that. We knew that we were going to make the
race so we just want to work on it and get it a little bit faster for the race
and just get seat time."
