The string of bad luck continued for Robert Huffman on Saturday in Martinsville. After a qualifying effort of 20.839 seconds and 90.868 mph, Huffman started his #12 Toyota Tundra/Whitehouse Foods truck from the 20th spot on the grid.
Robert did not waste any time picking up positions on the track. By lap 80, he had driven his way to the 13th position and was settling in for the long haul by being patient and taking care of his equipment. Then, on lap 81, there was a wreck going into turn 4. Robert appeared to have made his way through the wrecked trucks, until one of the damaged trucks rolled down the track and hit Robert on the right front, causing significant damage to the #12 Toyota. Huffman was able to drive his truck behind the pit wall where his Innovative Motorsports team worked feverishly to repair the damage. Repairs were made quickly, but at a short track like Martinsville, the laps go quick, and that was the case as Robert went back out 30 laps down to the leader.
Rick Gay, the #12 teams Crew Chief, said, “The crew did a good job of getting Robert back out on the track, and Robert did a great job of not losing any more laps. Robert drove his butt off and, had it not been for that accident, we would most likely have a top-10 finish.”
Though frustrated with his first three races, Robert said, “We are having a string of bad luck right now, but Rick’s a great leader, and we’ll start a string of good luck in Mansfield. All these guys work so hard to give me a truck capable of winning each race, and I can’t wait for Mansfield to get this team and my Toyota/Whitehouse Foods truck a good finish.”
Robert and the No. 12 Toyota Tundra/Whitehouse Foods truck return to the track on May 16, 2004, at the Ohio 250 when the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series returns to action in Mansfield, OH.
