Considered one of the fastest tracks on the NASCAR circuit, Atlanta Motor Speedway hosted the second race of the 2004 Craftsman Truck Series season. Qualifying for the Easy Care Vehicle Service Contracts 200 could have been billed as the "Day of the Toyotas." Robert Huffman was a one of six Toyotas who made headlines after qualifying in the Top 10. A time of 30.947 seconds (179.15 mph) was enough to put his Toyota/White House Apple Juice sponsored truck on the outside of the front row. After good practice sessions and a great qualifying effort, Huffman was poised for a good run in the inaugural NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Taking the green flag before a record crowd of 90,000, Huffman spun his tires, but quickly gathered up his truck and found a comfortable spot running in 3rd place. He was running 9th when the yellow flag waved for the first time on lap 44 when Tina Gordon got loose and slid up the track catching the front end of Rick Crawford and then spinning and hitting Hank Parker, Jr. in a head on collision that sent all three drivers to Atlanta Medical Center. Due to the severity of the accidents, NASCAR decided to throw the red flag, stopping the field in turns one and two while the track was cleared.
When the trucks started rolling again, Huffman headed down pit road for his first pit stop of the race. The IMI crew put on four fresh Goodyear Eagles, filled the tank with Sunoco racing fuel and sent him on his way. Running in 7th place on the lap 55 restart, he found himself as one of only 12 trucks on the lead lap. He ran strong in the Top 10 all day until an unfortunate accident late in the race put an end to his day. With 4 laps remaining Huffman got loose off of turn four. While trying to gain control of his truck he slid into the outside retaining wall on the front stretch, then bumped another truck coming back across the track. Huffman skated through the infield, then back onto the track hitting the wall in turn one. He emerged from his truck unharmed, but disappointed with his 29th place finish.
After being released from the infield care center, Robert said, "I'm really disappointed that this happened. Gere Kennon, Rick Gay (crew chief), and the rest of my team have worked their butts off to give me a truck capable of winning. I was hoping to get Toyota and Whitehouse Applejuice a Top-5 or Top-10 finish today but we came up a few laps short. I'll be at the race shop on Monday helping the team anyway I can…I'm not going to wreck my truck and not be there Monday morning to help."
The truck series is off until April 17th when they'll face off at Martinsville Speedway in the Kroger 250. Race time is set for 1:00 PM.
