DAVID REUTIMANN, #17 NTN BEARINGS TOYOTA:
"The guys have been doing a great job everywhere we've gone. The truck drove good. The wind picked up a little bit and I think it made us a little tight. Hopefully the wind will stay the same for everybody. There's a lot of good trucks to come so hopefully it will stand up. I'm hoping that's good enough to get us in the top-10 somewhere. It was good, other than it got a little tight and when you're running wide open anyway it doesn't take but just a little bit to scrub off speed. I was secretly hoping that we'd be about a .78 or .75. I think we ran close to a .81 or something in practice but that's a whole lot better than I have been in the past at some places. It was good. I was real happy with the guys. Hopefully we're as good when we get it in race trim."
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT HERE IN THE RACE? "It's hard to say. It's such a big unknown and me not having any truck races, really, anyway is another big unknown. Every Cup race and Busch race that I've seen have been great races at this facility so there's not reason the truck can't do the same thing. I felt like at Daytona that our races were the best race of the weekend. Hopefully we can do the same thing here."
CAN YOU MOVE OTHER TRUCKS AROUND ON THE TRACK WITH THE AERODYNAMICS? "I would think you could. In practice you are only running a couple laps at a time but you never really get a chance to do that with anybody. You'll probably be able to find more of that out when you get into final practice toward the end when you get a lot of people out there. Maybe the groove will widen out. Right now the groove is right there on the bottom because everybody is worried about qualifying. Nobody is really worried about racing so hopefully by the end of final practice we will have a better idea of what is going on."
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH IN THE RACE? "This team is capable of coming out of there with a top-five. The jury is still out on whether the driver can do it or not but the team is definitely capable of doing it."
BRANDON WHITT, #38 CURE AUTISM NOW/MCMILLIAN HOMES FORD:
"The track changed a little bit. We decided to go ahead and gamble and just try and do one lap. We saw that in practice that was always our fastest in practice was always our first one so we went ahead and did that. I think the motor got up to temperature a little too quick so that might have slowed us down. We'll see what happens. The truck is driving excellent. We're going to go ahead and work on it for happy hour now and get ready for the race."
KELLY SUTTON, #02 TEAM COPAXONE CHEVROLET:
"We're definitely not where we need to be but hopefully we'll make it in. If not, we definitely got some experience and we'll definitely be at Martinsville but for Team Copaxone I really hope we get into this race."
HOW MUCH DO YOU LEARN DURING A WEEKEND WHEN YOU ARE A RAYBESTOS ROOKIE? "Not much. We don't get a whole lot of practice. We came down here to test but it rained out twice both days so we didn't get to test so I think that hurt us a little bit. Being the first time here and being new to the truck series kind of makes it a little hard. When I was running the Dash Series at least when it was a new track you at least knew your car. You'd been running it for a while. It makes it a little hard but we're fighters. My team is a bunch of good guys and we're going to rally together and keep plugging at this and hopefully get in some races."
ROBERT HUFFMAN, #12 TOYOTA TUNDRA TOYOTA:
ARE YOU DISAPPOINTED THAT YOU DIDN'T WIN THE POLE? "I'm just happy to be here . To qualify up front like we have is pretty amazing for me. I feel like I might have left a little out there qualifying but we didn't need to wreck qualifying. We have to qualify to get in the show, up through the first four , and that's all we tried to do: try to be safe and try to get in the race."
YOU HAVE BEEN WITH TOYOTA A LONG TIME AND TODAY THERE ARE TWO TOYOTAS ON THE FRONT ROW. "TRD has worked really hard on the engine and those guys have spent a lot of time and money on the body and going to the wind tunnel. Todd and all the guys at TRD in Greensboro have really worked hard on the body side and all the guys out in California have worked hard on the motor side. It's paying off when we get to tracks like this. I think we're going to be good. It's going to make these other makes do their homework."
DID YOU RUN A PERFECT LAP? "Not from my standpoint. Of course any driver always says he could do a little better if he had it to do over again. I came off the gas a little bit in both ends. I don't know if it was enough to make the truck go any slower or not but it was enough to make me feel better."
YOU MIGHT BE A RAYBESTOS ROOKIE BUT DO YOU THINK YOU CAN WIN THE RACE? "I'd like to go every week thinking I've got a shot to win no matter where we're at. It doesn't always play out where you can win but I like to go into the race thinking I have a shot to win and then do as good as we can from that. I think we have a shot at winning."
HUFFMAN PRESS CONFERENCE
"The whole truck thing has really been a big change for me. Getting to know the radial tires over the bias ply tires and actually come back to Atlanta from the quarter-mile to the mile and a half. Toyota has been awfully good to me and helped me move up in the Craftsman Truck Series, let me move up with them. It's going to be an exciting venture. Hopefully we can get the truck running good enough that we can run the whole race. Unfortunate things happened to us at Daytona but we're looking forward to getting a race in here. I like these kind of racetracks so hopefully we'll have a good showing here tomorrow."
HOW DO YOU GET A GOOD LAP OUT OF THE TRUCK HERE? "I'm not really sure . I only have 15 or so laps around here and I don't think that was the best lap we could probably get. I think the biggest thing is that it's a track where you actually can run wide open or almost wide open so you have to be pretty smooth and make your corner entry right to keep the truck freed up off the corners is my opinion of it. I'm not positively sure but it's the best that I gathered from it. The truck have a tendency to want to push the front end at a lot of the tracks like this I think or they did at Texas. They don't seem to be as bad here. I think the biggest thing that you have to understand with Toyota is TRD is the only one building the Toyota motors right now and where you get into a mix of the Fords you have Jack building 'em or Yates building 'em. You have about five or six different guys building the motors and the same way with Chevrolet and the same way with Dodge. TRD kind of has a hand on that. If Jack was building all the Ford motors then maybe they would have four in the top-five. It's hard to say. Like Carl said, when they take 'em to the chassis dyno which they will after the race, and they take 'em to the wind tunnel, I commend NASCAR. I think the template rule has been super good. I didn't really get to drive the truck much before but the trucks seem to be pretty close and I know when they chassis dynoed them at Daytona they seem to be pretty close. We'll see after the race what the deal is."
REUTIMANN PRESS CONFERENCE
WERE THESE YOUR FIRST LAPS AT ATLANTA IN A TRUCK? "Yeah, these were the first truck laps, although the Texas track and this track are setup wise, not much different than what we were at Texas. We had a little more right front spring and some other subtle changes but for the most part we're about like we left at Texas so I think that Texas test was a huge benefit for all the Toyota teams."
WAS ATLANTA LIKE YOU EXPECTED? "Texas gets your attention but Atlanta kind of grabs you by your throat and gets your attention. Once we got eight or ten laps out there and got settled down a little bit the truck was driving good and the guys did a great job so I was feeling a little more at ease. I was glad to get the two laps over with, though."
DID YOUR OWNER, DARRELL WALTRIP, GIVE YOU ANY TIPS ABOUT THIS PLACE? "He basically told me not to screw up. He left it at that. He let's me do my own deal most of the time. He tries to keep me upbeat and loose because he knows I get tensed up."
WHAT DID HE SAY AFTERWARD? "He had to leave earlier. He said he had to go do some stuff to pay for all the stuff that I was getting to drive. He told me he felt like that was a good lap and we felt like it would stay in the top-five. He congratulated the whole team and he keeps the guys pumped up. He was really happy when he left so I think he's probably really happy right now."
COMMENT ON QUALIFYING VERSUS RACE CONDITIONS. "Obviously you have two drastically different setups from qualifying to race. After final practice I'll probably know some more about that. All we really worked on was qualifying, anyway, in our whole practice run. Hopefully we'll be as good if not better, I'm hoping."
THIS IS TOYOTA'S FIRST TRUCK RACE AT ATLANTA AND WON THE FIRST POLE. "Yeah, that's cool. You don't stop and look at things like that. You're just trying to run as fast as you can and then when you finally do get to that point you're like 'Wow, there's a bunch of added bonuses.' It's great. My dad is here this weekend so that makes it even better."
CARL EDWARDS SAID THAT TOYOTAS MIGHT HAVE A BIG ADVANTAGE BECAUSE THEY QUALIFIED IN FOUR OF THE TOP-FIVE POSITIONS. DO YOU FEEL LIKE THERE IS AN ADVANTAGE? "No. I think what it boils down to is we had a Toyota test at Texas with all the Toyotas and this track, it's not the same but there's a lot of similarities. If we could unload and change very few things I have no reason to believe that all the other Toyotas didn't have to change much either. I don't think that's the case. I don't think that we're any better than anybody else. It happen to work out better for us this weekend so far."
