David Reutimann top Raybestos Rookie in Florida Dodge Dealers 250
ROBERT HUFFMAN, #12 TUNDRA TOYOTA:
WHAT HAPPENED? "I told all those guys you can't win a race unless you are there
at the end and naturally we're not. The caution had been out for a fourth of a
lap and I guess the 08 [Ken Weaver] either didn't listen in the driver's meeting
or his spotter couldn't tell it was out or something and just wrecked us down
the frontstretch. It's a crying shame. All these guys put a lot of hard work and
effort into the deal. We'll be back at Atlanta."
THERE SEEMED TO BE A LOT OF WILD RACING WITH DRIVERS SWITCHING LANES CONSTANTLY.
"It wasn't kind of crazy, it was crazy . I was just trying to hold my
own and learn what was going on with the trucks. They were dicing around and I
got into a couple of positions that I didn't like when I was three-wide and in
the middle. The truck didn't like it at all. I was sitting on the bottom in a
comfortable position where the truck was really running good and I was content
to be there for a while and all this came down. We'll just come back at
Atlanta."
TRACY HINES, #88 MENARDS CHEVROLET:
"The guys with the cameras probably have a better view. I was running the
low groove and the truck was handling extremely well and the Menards guys did a
good job on the pit stop. There was a truck that came from the high side, from
the middle of the track, right in front of my nose. You can't react that quick
when they come down. I know the tape will probably show it a little bit better
than I can explain it."
KEN WEAVER, #08 PHONECO /1-800-4-A-PHONE DODGE:
"In that one, I couldn't see it. We went low and the spotter said go high
and then I don't know who I hit but he obviously spun up into me."
WHAT HAPPENED WITH STEVE PARK? "I thought we were racing. He went left, went
right, came back right, and I couldn't get away from him. I don't want to tear
up anybody's equipment. And that stuff on the front, when you've got guys on
your bumper you can only check up so much until you shorten the truck. And I
remember last year getting hit multiple times and no one ever went to the
trailer for that but I'm sure they will make an example out of me."
CHASE MONTGOMERY, #8 BOBBY HAMILTON RACING DODGE:
"We went to the back in a hurry and finally got a chance to work on the truck
and we were coming back to the front. I think we had just got back into the
top-10. I was running high and had just got around LaJoie. I was running
the high line. I could either turn into the wall or turn down and hope nobody's
there. I was slowing down and turning down and I think I got hit from behind and
pushed into it. It was a mess. All I could see was smoke. It's unfortunate.
These guys have worked and it showed the other day when we qualified second and
we were coming back to the front. It's a tough way to start the year off. We'll
go to Atlanta and get them there."
David Reutimann In The #17 NTN Bearings Toyota was the Raybestos® Rookie Of
The Race at Daytona. He finished ninth, the only first-year driver to score a
Top-10 finish.
"We should have been better than what we were. We had a truck capable of winning
the race. I just seemed to keep getting in the wrong line. You come down there
and you've got a run on a guy and you've got a guy pushing you and you just know
that when you fade to the outside they're going to go with you and all of a
sudden the truck slows down and you look in the mirror and the guy is gone. I
learned a lot. I think I kind of screwed up there and got into Steve Park there
coming off of four there and got him messed up and I hate that. The rest of the
night there was some stuff happening around me but I wasn't in it. I really
wanted to get out of there without touching anybody but this is the NASCAR
Craftsman Truck Series and that's what it's all about. All in all we had a good
showing. The truck is still in one piece and I'm pretty happy with that."
HOW CLOSE DID YOU GET TO THE BIG ACCIDENT? "We were ahead of that one because I
remember they said 'Wreck behind you' and we came around there and there were
coil springs and everything laying on the racetrack. I don't know exactly how
that one got started. I was thanking the Lord that I was ahead of that one, for
sure."
DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE LUCKY AFTER FINISHING A RACE LIKE THIS ONE? "Probably
blessed would be a better word for it. There were a couple of situations that I
put myself in that I probably shouldn't have been in and could have got us in
some trouble and it didn't and there were other instances where I got out of the
hole and saved us from being involved in a big wreck. I think I made some good
decisions and I think I made some really poor ones, too. I guess that's part of
the learning deal."
THE RACING TONIGHT WAS VERY INTENSE. IS THERE ANYTHING NASCAR CAN DO TO HELP THE
SITUATION? "I don't know what else you can do. I enjoyed it. That's probably the
most fun I've had in a long, long time. It is a little crazy but I guess if it
bothers you, I don't know, maybe you should be driving something different
maybe. It took me a long time to get here so I'm not going to complain about how
the racing is right now. It is a little crazy. I've seen Winston Cup races that
have torn up a lot more. I don't really have an opinion. I'm just glad I'm
racing. That's my deal."
YOU FINISHED IN THE TOP-10 IN YOUR FIRST CRAFTSMAN TRUCK SERIES START. THIS MUST
GIVE YOU MOMENTUM ENTERING THE RACE AT ATLANTA. "Fortunately I've been to
Atlanta once and then tested there in a Busch car. At least I've been the
racetrack when we get there and I feel real good about that. The first chance to
work with Bobby Kennedy and Jason Overstreet and the guys, those guys performed
extremely well. The truck was great from the green flag. We just made little
adjustments on it and we had a truck capable of winning. I can't ask for anymore
than that, especially with the time span that we had to build everything. The
guys did a tremendous job."
JOE ARAMENDIA, #31 ARMENDIA PLUMBING DODGE:
YOU BOUNCED BACK FROM PROBLEMS EARLY IN THE RACE AND RAN WELL BEFORE THE
ACCIDENT. "We were coming and I was having a great old time. At the beginning of
the race we had a problems with an oil fitting. We came in the pits and lost a
couple of laps getting that fixed and then we got our laps back. I was just in
there having fun. I don't know what happened up there but when I was getting
there trucks were going every which way and nothing but smoke and I was shutting
her down. The next thing I know I've got her sideways and somebody just hit the
door. It's all good; it was fun."
SHELBY HOWARD, #23 BILL DAVIS RACING TOYOTA:
DID YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENED? "I just seen a bunch of smoke and trucks sliding
in front of me and then I got hit from behind and turned around. It's just an
unfortunate deal, speedway racing. They were pretty crazy out there tonight. We
got tore up a little bit earlier but the truck was still fast and we were just
trying to get a good finish out of it. I've got to thank Bill Davis and Toyota
for giving me the opportunity to be here. I guess we'll be at Atlanta next month
ready to go."
A LOT OF THE MOVES SOME DRIVERS WERE MAKING PROBABLY SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN MADE
THAT EARLY IN THE RACE. "I don't agree with a lot of stuff that was going on out
there. All you can do is drive your race and try to stay out of trouble. I had a
feeling from last night that things were going to be that way
tonight. We were just trying to survive the thing and be there at the end but
unfortunately got caught up in one of the crashes."
JOEY CLANTON, #40 KEY MOTORSPORTS CHEVROLET:
"I was riding. I tried to stay to the outside just so I could watch what was
going on. We got up to tenth there and we were just riding. I had a faster truck
than that and I just wanted to stay out of trouble. I got myself into trouble
because I messed up on the pit stop. I just about ran over Musgrave's guys
and I came in and slid through my pits and we got penalized but we got that
back. We were coming back up through the field and the truck was really running
fast and we were able to pass. I guess it's Daytona and it's how they race here.
They are all over the racetrack and not really staying in line and staying with
partners. They were really shifting around and they were doing that from the
get-go. I tried to stay out of trouble but I guess that's the way we're going to
have to race these guys. My hat's off to my guys who worked their tails off this
week to get this thing ready. We hung in there; we made this race and we proved
to them that we're here. To get all the way to the top-10 at Daytona with these
guys, we know what we're doing."
